A recent scientific study has revealed some very alarming results
with respect to using hair dyes. Yes, this study clearly shows that
regular use of non-natural hair dyes over a long period of time, or in a
professional capacity, can lead to cancer.
Here's what it said:
"Epidemiologic
studies have revealed an association between occupational exposure to
hair dyes and incidence of cancers. Several cohort and case-studies have
shown increased risk of bladder cancer among hairdressers and barbers
who are occupationally exposed to hair dyes. It has been reported that
there is a statistically significant and a dose-dependent association
between hair dyeing and risk of ovarian cancer.
Women with
prolonged use of dark, particularly black, hair dyes may have increased
risk of fatal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and multiple myeloma (Murata, et al., 2006)".
[The
above are the first two paragraphs of the study by Murata and
colleagues, which provides an alarming set of information that every one
who uses non-natural hair dyes should be aware of.]
The
chemicals associated with these non-natural hair care products are
dangerous and potentially life threatening. This study has many
implications and should be distributed as widely as possible, because
many men and women use these types of products without the knowledge
that they may be causing themselves long-term health problems.
Natural
hair care products used to dye hair do not contain these toxic
chemicals and while natural hair dyes may not be as easy to use and may
not last as long as some of their toxic counter-parts, the reduction in
risk to one's health has to be worth the extra effort - if indeed there
is extra effort involved.
The warnings however, should not stop
there. Hair shampoos and conditioners manufactured by many leading
cosmetic companies still contain ingredients such as SLS (Sodium Lauryl
Sulfate) and other potentially harmful ingredients, yet there are no
warnings on the packets or labels to make consumers aware of any
potential dangers. These types of chemicals, SLS, Parabens,
Formaldehydes, MIT's, etc., should be avoided at all cost.
It is
true, that in some cases, for example parabens, the scientist still do
not agree whether these are indeed carcinogenic or not, but as I am not a
gambler, my suggestion is, better not to use them in the first place,
then find out later that they are...
Similarly, although there is a
shift toward using natural, safe ingredients in skin care products,
there are still manufactures that will use non-natural ingredients which
have not been sufficiently tested for their safety. Here too, it is
wise to be cautious and err on the side of 'rather safe, then sorry', by
choosing truly natural skin care products over others.
Let's have
a look at a typical body moisturizing lotion. The following ingredients
are contained in a well known brand of skin care products:
Water - fine
Isopropyl Myristate - non-toxic
Glycerin - non-toxic
Stearic Acid - may cause eye irritation
Cetyl Esters
- Effects of Exposure: Immediate effects: Eye, skin and mucous
membrane; Irritation may occur. Delayed effects: irritation of
skin/eyes, burning, dryness, acne, hypopigmentation and dermatitis have
been experienced.
PEG-100 - Effects of Exposure:
Skin: Dermatitis, Sensitisation/Allergic Reaction; Material is a
photosensitiser; May irritate the eyes and skin.
Glyceryl Stearate - non-toxic
Triethanolamine
- Skin/Eyes: Irritation, Redness, Pain, and Damage. Ingestion: Burns
mouth, Pharynx and Esophagus; Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and
diarrhoea.
Stearamide DEA - Effects of Exposure:
Eyes: Mild eye irritation. Skin: Mild skin irritation (after prolonged
or repeated contact). Inhalation: Irritation (upper respiratory tract).
Prolonged or repeated overexposure may cause central nervous system
depression. If swallowed: Irritation to gastrointestinal tissue; Central
nervous system depression.
Allantoin - non-toxic
Methyl paraben
- Inhalation: Very dangerous. Eyes: Irritant. Skin: Irritant.
Ingestion: Irritant. Substance is toxic to Lungs. Repeated/prolonged
exposure to the substance can produce organ damage.
Imidazolidinyl Urea
- Possible allergic reaction. Irritant reaction will occur at the test
sites of patents suffering with suspected contact dermatitis.
Carbomer
- Effects of Exposure: Eyes: Irritation, corneal injury. Skin:
Irritation/burns. Inhalation: upper respiratory irritation, anaesthesia.
Ingestion: cardiac rate changes (persons with liver/kidney problems
should avoid contact).
Propyl paraben - Eyes/Skin: irritant. Inhalation/Ingestion: Dangerous. Substance is toxic to lungs.

Personal Care, Cleaning Products And Food - Do You Really Know What's In Them? 2
Supplements
I have also learnt from my research that the soil which grows our produce isn't like it used to be and is lacking a lot of the minerals that we used to get from our fresh fruit and vegetables. So while you think you are eating a healthy diet it is actually lacking. Also produce can be harvested early and stored for long periods of time. Early harvesting and storage conditions affect the quality of our produce. By quality I mean the goodness in them, for example Antioxidants which helps fight the free radicals we have in our bodies are lacking due to the early harvesting, conditions and length of time they are stored before being available to the public to purchase.
Good quality (and I stress good quality) supplements can give us what we are lacking and improve all aspect of our health and wellbeing. It can even work on allergies and eczema which is just what my family needs. I have tried some supplements long term with no real change at all so that is why I say good quality or you may as well throw your money away.
Supplements are not a substitute for a healthy diet but an addition to your diet.

I looked into the ingredients in these products and found lots that are questionable but 2 that I will talk about are firstly Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) which can be found in toothpaste, shampoo, bubble bath and is also used in engine degreasers, floor cleaners and so on. It has been linked to Cancer and is a skin and eye irritant. The other product is Propylene Glycol which is used as a humectant food additive, found in cosmetics, toothpaste, shampoo's, antifreeze, solvent and so on. It has been linked to Cancer, is a skin and eye irritant and also a neurotoxin.
Again why do they use these ingredients. it is cheap option for companies to use.
The more research I did the more confused I was. Some said in small doses it's ok, others said it was bad no matter how low the dose. The above 2 ingredients are linked with allergies, eczema and much much more. I was asking myself.
'How do I know the truth and what to do?'
Then it hit me, it's all about choice and my personal choice. Do I want to risk it - NO. Do I want a change for the girls and their health - YES. So I have to get rid of all the nasty chemicals. I'm in the process of changing over so much in my house and have found some great products. If anyone wants any further info ask me I and I will help where I can. I will be doing lot more posts on my research, findings and my opinion.
For years I would just go to the shops and buy what was on the shelves trusting that it wouldn't be there if it was harmful. Not thinking enough about what was in our products. Now I always ask myself do I want to RISK it No I don't. Ask yourself the same question?

In my quest to have healthy children and a healthy home I have gained so much knowledge and I was asking myself
'Why didn't I know this and why didn't anyone tell me sooner?'
Our History
Both of my girls have been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease around Christmas 2010, the change to a Gluten Free diet has been great. Initially it was overwhelming as I cook because we need to eat not because I have a passion for cooking.
Breanna would have terrible pain in the tummy several times a day to the point she would tense up from it. Since removing Gluten it improved a lot but did not disappear. A doctor advised me she would have to learn to control it. Breanna suffers from ulcers quite regularly and in my research I found that as they are reoccurring she may have vitamin deficiencies, including iron deficiency, and folate, zinc, or vitamin B12 deficient. When I asked the doctor about this I was advised that her latest blood tests showed nothing lacking other than a slight lacking in Protein. Breanna also has a mild case of Cerebral Palsy and has accomplished so much in her young life that if I can do anything to make the rest of her health better I will.
Tashy has various allergies and would break out in HIVES several times a week in the warmer months, a blood test revealed dust mites allergies but due to it being around more in the warmer months I believe it's also seasonal. There would be days I found no reason at all so I believed some foods would set it off also. Trying to narrow down why this happens is really hard. A doctor advised me that since it wasn't life threating as in not causing any breathing problems then this is just how it is. Tashy has eczema as well and if not managed she will be constantly scratching and breaking out. Tahsy also has so much energy and doesn't sleep well. I love her energy that's what makes her Tashy but she needs to sleep. She just can't settle and go to sleep but once she is asleep she goes OK most of the time but this is a recent change she used to wake all night long as well.
I refuse to accept that all of these health concerns is just how it should be.
What I do now - Coeliac
I have removed Gluten from the girl's diet and found a big change so I researched as much as I could and this leads me down many paths.
There is lots of talk around why so many are now being diagnosed with Coeliac Disease and I have asked so many the question and done so much research. Here are the main opinions:
1. Too much wheat in our diets, wheat is in so much of our food products, such thickening agents the list goes on. (There is now beginning to be a shift and more and more Gluten free products are becoming available) The reason there is wheat in so much is it is cheap for companies to use. (A little like what is happening with our Personal Care Products and Cleaning Products, I'll get to this shortly)
2. Diagnostic methods these days are far better than in the past so more are being diagnosed.
I can't say for sure why but I believe it's a mixture of the both of the above.
Other Ingredients
In my journey I was left wondering if Gluten has made such a difference and I didn't realise it was in so much then what else am I missing. If I look at other ingredients maybe there will be other significant changes to our lives.
I looked more at foods and found there's lot I need to avoid and that they may make a difference with Tashy and her sleep and much more, I have a handy card that I carry with me so whenever I'm shopping I can check the ingredients.

personal care product over the course of a year. Although some of these
reactions may be due to subjective sensory irritation, various studies
reveal that up to 10% of dermatologic patients who are patch tested are
allergic to cosmetic products or their constituent ingredients.
Causative products include deodorants and perfumes, skin care products,
hair care products, and nail cosmetics. Allergic contact dermatitis
mainly results from fragrance chemicals and preservatives.
Recent work has suggested that additional fragrance chemicals may need to be tested in order to identify those patients 'missed' by the current fragrance mix; in particular, hydroxy-isohexyl-3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde has been singled out as an important sensitizing agent. The increased usage of natural fragrances and botanic extracts can also cause problems in their own right or through co-reactivity. The preservative methyldibromoglutaronitrile has also been recognized as an increasingly important sensitizer in Europe, which has led to the recent recommendation that it should be prohibited from 'leave-on' products until information on 'safe' consumer levels becomes available. Other emerging allergens include UV filters, tosylamide/formaldehyde resin, and nail acrylates.
Fragrance ingredients are the most frequent cause of cosmetic allergy, accounting for up to 30-45% of allergic reactions to cosmetics in eczema patients. As well as being found in products marketed to provide a scent they are also incorporated into the majority of other skin care products. Fragrance ingredients can cause dermatitis at the sites of application and also volatile or photosensitive patterns of contact dermatitis, but may involve other sites by direct transfer or even connubial contact.
Managing patients with proven fragrance allergy often proves extremely difficult. Advising patients to use products labeled as 'fragrance free' will not necessary avoid all contact with fragrance materials due to a discrepancy in the accepted definition of the term. Fragrance is defined as any substance, natural or synthetic, used solely to impart an odor to a cosmetic product. However, if a fragrance material has more than one function (e.g. preservative or emollient) it could legally still be included in a fragrance-free product.
Although these masking fragrances are uncommon sensitizers, fragrance-allergic patients should avoid them wherever possible. These substances include benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, and cyclopentadecanolamide. Consumers may also be unaware that rose oil, sandalwood oil, and cedarwood oil are all fragrances and that other essential oils, flower plant extracts, and flavorings are also usually fragrances. Therefore, it is important to acknowledge that natural fragrances and botanical extracts may also cause problems for the fragrance-allergic individual.
Though further research is needed, a recent study has found that a common group of chemicals used to preserve deodorants have been detected in breast-cancer tissue. Researchers at the University of Reading in England found traces of these chemicals, called parabens, in 18 out of 20 samples, suggesting that they may be absorbed by the body after they are applied to the skin. By reading the ingredients of the products you purchase you can become educated on what they contain and be able to reduce unwanted substances.
